of the City of South Miami for your support of endorsed candidates

When a South Miami's city
commissioner announced he was stepping down recently due to health reasons, a
special election was called for January 13 to fill the vacancy.
SAVE's Candidate Endorsement
Subcommittee, with very little time to do so, managed to interview four of the
five candidates for the open seat (one candidate did not seek the
endorsement). After unanimous recommendation to endorse Valerie Newman,
as the candidate that showed the greatest potential to lead in advancing the
cause of LGBT equality, SAVE's board endorsed her.
At the first Political Committee
meeting, the Grassroots Action Subcommittee committed to help our endorsed
candidate win. SAVE provided five volunteers for Valerie Newman's phone
bank that next weekend, days before the vote. Thanks to our volunteers for putting the time in to
make this phone bank happen on such short notice.
Yesterday, our efforts to support
Valerie paid off, and she was elected as city commissioner for South Miami with
559 votes, nearly twice what her competitors received!
Next, our Lobbying Subcommittee can
go into action, to lobby the City of South Miami to make sure they keep the
pro-equality laws they already have on their books, and that they add anything
they are lacking, whether that be domestic partner benefits or protection for
transgender employees and residents.
Great work team! And a good
beginning for the first two weeks of 2009!
