COMMUNITY
Solving homelessness in the name of equality
SAVE Dade’s Community Outreach Sub-Committee has begun an initiative to build bridges with communities that have not had very strong ties with the pro-LGBT movement in the past, especially the African American, Latino and faith-based communities. At the forefront of the initiative, SAVE Dade has partnered with Camillus House, a Christian organization that provides aid and services to the homeless.
The mission of Camillus House is to eradicate chronic homelessness in Miami-Dade within 10 years. Camillus understands the effects of homelessness on the LGBT community and currently offers services regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Their capital campaign, which includes a 400 room transitional living facility, will have a section dedicated to transgender people as they understand the unique challenges faced by this segment of our community.
Our project will begin on Sunday, April 26. With the help of volunteers, SAVE Dade is committed to working with Camillus House once a month, feeding, processing and providing clothes to the homeless. Skill-based volunteers are also a crucial aspect in ensuring the success of this task. SAVE Dade hopes to engage professionals to offer their expertise to the services of Camillus House, such as counseling, life-skill training, social work and advocacy, as we come together with the organization to achieve a common purpose.
If you would like to participate in this project by volunteering with SAVE Dade, please contact our community coordinator, Joseph Mooridian at joseph@savedade.org or call (305) 751-7283
