CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
April is National Volunteer Month!
In the spirit of National Volunteer Month, as well as Global Youth Service Day on April 24-26, SAVE Dade is calling on everyone wishing to join the fight for equality to volunteer with us on the various projects that lay just ahead. As SAVE Dade continues to expand its mission of LGBT equality, volunteers are increasingly more important in the spectrum of political, social, outreach and fundraising efforts. This edition of News Now is dedicated to volunteerism and all the work that volunteers can do to make a difference in our community. Whether your volunteer work takes you towards being an elected official or entering data at the SAVE office, your work is important to the sector and the movement. This weekend is going to be packed full of exciting and demanding events for both SAVE Dade and the City of Miami Beach. SAVE Dade is kicking-off the weekend by co-sponsoring the outrageous comedy show Fruit Cocktail on Friday, April 17. Volunteers will be needed to help spread the word about the show, canvassing in various locations, such as Lincoln Road, Halo, Score, and other LGBT hotspots. All proceeds of Fruit Cocktail will go to SAVE Dade and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
On Saturday, April 18, Miami Beach will throw its first city-supported gay pride event in its history. SAVE Dade is looking for volunteers who have experience with costume design, organizing and special events. Participate in this momentous event by marching with us in the Inaugural Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade down Ocean Drive beginning at noon. Volunteer ideas and creativity are encouraged in the planning and layout of SAVE Dade’s role in the parade. Following the march, SAVE Dade will have a booth set up at the PROUD Festival & Expo. Volunteers will be needed to help us spread SAVE Dade’s initiative of LGBT equality and recruit future volunteers.
The weekend closes with the 2009 AIDS Walk Miami on Sunday, April 19, which raises money for over 9,000 South Floridians affected/infected with HIV/AIDS. SAVE Dade needs volunteers to join our team and walk shoulder-to-shoulder during this annual event, helping collect the most money possible for the fight to end HIV/AIDS in our community. |
