Anti-gay groups have gathered the required signatures to place an amendment
in our state constitution that would read as follows:

Marriage Protection Amendment

Inasmuch as marriage is the legal union of only one man and one woman as
husband and wife, NO OTHER LEGAL UNION THAT IS TREATED AS MARRIAGE OR THE SUBSTANTIAL EQUIVALENT THEREOF SHALL BE VALID OR RECOGNIZED.

This language clearly intends to ban a lot more than same-sex marriage. This
amendment would ban civil unions, and could likely ban domestic partner
registries throughout Florida and end domestic partner benefits in the
public sector. These are but some of the results in other states where
similar language has passed.

Last month, anti-gay groups held a press conference to announce that they have gathered 100% of the signatures they need to place the anti-gay Amendment to the Florida Constitution on the November 2008 ballot.  We now need more than ever to get the word out to defeat this measure that would prohibit not only same-sex marriage, but also civil unions and basic protections for all unmarried couples, straight and gay.  This amendment would even take away rights already received by some couples through domestic partnership registries! Unfortunately, twenty-six other states have passed similar amendments because people who oppose them do not realize the urgency until it is too late. Our community needs to come together and act! If you want to defeat this hateful Amendment, the time to VOLUNTEER is now !
