19 DAYS LEFT TO THE DEFEAT OF AMENDMENT 2
Miami, FL (Send to Friend)
With the days counting down toward Election Day, SAVE continues to work to keep Amendment 2 out of Florida's constitution. Our movement got to celebrate a victory this week when Connecticut's Supreme Court legalized gay marriage. Here in Florida, that glorious decision strengthened one our our opposition's pro-Amendment 2 arguments -- that a constitutional amendment is needed to prevent an "activist judge" from allowing gay marriage in this state. This makes it imperative that we get our side's message out -- that this Amendment imperils existing rights and benefits for all unmarried Florida couples, and has consequences beyond those the average voter imagines.oooooo
The problem is, we're running out of time to deliver this message to the voters who will decide this election. This week SAVE ran its largest phone bank of the campaign, calling undecided voters in Miami-Dade County, giving them the facts about Amendment 2, and asking them to vote No -- but our community is not reaching enough of these swing voters to give us our best chance at victory. That's why we need your help -- the whole community's help -- because we need to reach as many Florida voters as we can before they decide the future of LGBT couples rights in Florida on Election Day. Let's fight this amendment as a community -- volunteer with SAVE today!

A Letter to the Editor from SAVE Member and Legal Professional Raul R.
The following letter was sent to the Miami Herald for publication in the Op-Ed section.
October 9, 2008
Letter to the Editor:
Amendment 2 on the November ballot ostensibly is
directed at de-legitimizing same-sex relationships in Florida - where gay
marriage is already unlawful. This raises the obvious question: why is this
necessary since the act it seeks to prohibit is already the law of the state?
The amendment, as it is worded, is
vague, overbroad and ambiguous. That's lawyer talk for what will undoubtedly
result in years of expensive and unnecessary litigation. Moreover, Amendment 2,
if enacted, potentially will affect much more than the gay community.
Heterosexual couples who now rely on their partners' employer-provided benefits
would be affected as well as many other "rights and benefits" of today's
non-married couples, possibly including issues of child rearing and co-parental
rights. Our senior citizens, many of whom find comfort and love in their golden
years, yet for a variety of reasons do not seek legally to "marry," will also be
affected. Because of this amendment, may folks will find themselves cut off from
relational rights and benefits and possibly even hospital and nursing home
visitation "rights" accorded only to "married" couples and "blood
relatives."
What began as a mean-spirited anti-gay
initiative has morphed into hatred for the many. Voters need to decide whether
you want to participate in this charade on the Florida public. Please vote No
on 2 for the good of all Floridians!

SAVE Guardian Society Member Mel Heifetz Voices his Opinion on the Presidential Election and Gives Account of an Evening with Barak Obama
Last night
here in Philly we had the honor and pleasure of having Barrack Obama for a
couple hours at two functions. It was marvelous seeing him only a few feet away
and hearing him speak of restoring the rule of law in America and the rights
of Habeas
corpus, plus end torture and close Guantanamo. He
wants respect brought back to our Nation and the Restoration of our Rights! He
pointed out, being here in Philly as the place where it all began had a special
significance. Lot's more was said, often interrupted by standing ovations! I was
very touched by the entire experience last night. I had a photo taken with him
and expressed but one thought to him I said" every generation deserves a Great
President in there lives and I think you will be that person". There was first
an all GLBT event at which our local community raised over $200,000.00 with the
leadership of Malcolm Lazin, that was held at a local hotel. It was followed by
an invitation only diner at the home of David Cohen, the president of Comcast.
This event was very upscale and was limited to 250 persons after having started
at having only 50 guests. It was not gay, but there were several of us invited
in addition to Ed rendell our Governor; One of our Senators, Bob Casey and his
gay brother; Our Mayor Michael Nutter; Jon van Jovi and a host of other
recognizable, well healed guests. We were told this was the most
profitable political fund raiser event ever in the State of Pennsylvania and
brought in over Five Million Dollars! This will pay the entire cost of Barracks
thirty minute prime time television appearance next week. It was also the only
appearance he will make to any GLBT audience before the election. I must add
that I was filled with pride and admiration at being so near to what may be the
best friend our community has ever had in the White House! Our influence in
electing him will be felt for many generations to come and we may protect the
balance of power in the Supreme Court. I can only end this brief description
with urging you to not only vote, but try to influence all those you know to do
likewise. We all should be a part of this Historic moment in our history.
